Was there ever a solution to this problem? I have experienced what I think is the same issue. My config file is set up with www.mysite.com, and I put a 301 redirect in my .htaccess file so that anyone visiting mysite.com would be redirected to www."mysite".com, however that broke the sear...

Same happened here. I upgraded from 1.6 to 1.6.2 and I couldn't access the admin login page - kept getting a 404 error message. I completely deleted my .htaccess page from root and was able to continue into the admin without trouble, so continued upgrading to 1.6.4 hoping it was just an unresolved ...
