I've got a site I'm working on, and they want either Google Cal adoption on their homepage, which is straightforward enough I think, or another calendar, similar to the one on this page:

What is the best calendar module for one or the other of these two options?  If CGCalendar, how would I add in the drop down - or is it more customized?

I think CGCalendar is the best option at the moment.
Install it and try it out yourself. 

There are several options to show the calendar on the site, and on the forum are also some threads describing other possibilities with the default templates.
Hope this helps a bit for now.
