Templating question

Hi there...im checking out your system for the first time and like its simplicity,but what im wondering is when creating my layout or template if you will can this be done say in dreamweaver...and do i upload the template to a specific directory or does it have to be pasted into the template administrator via the back end,i know its using the smarty template engine but since ive not used this type of template engine im not sure of the procedure im used to creating the template and ftp'ing to server such as with mambo...well thats it for now thanks
