SOLVED: upgrading from 1.67 to 1.9.4.2-which package to use?

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

SOLVED: upgrading from 1.67 to 1.9.4.2-which package to use?

Post by ilene »

I know this is a basic question, but which package do I use when upgrading from 1.67 to 1.9.4.2.
I'm thinking it should be cmsmadesimple-1.9.4.2-base.tar.gz

And Where can I find instructions on which package to use...Thanks: )

Devs -- VALID QUESTION, and something I have proposed before. Go into any module or admin folder, and under /lang, see if there are folders for many languages listed. If it is only English, then go with base.

Ok, this question keeps on appearing, so let's see if I'm able to explain this process a little better:
I'm very sorry, but it does involve a little bit of reading ;)

I need to upgrade, what do I do?
First, you make a backup of your current installation. This is just to be sure. If something goes wrong, you can easily revert to a state where everything is working like it should.
Replytomk3 has written a very useful guide: http://mkrd.info/software-discussions/c ... cmsms.html

Then you should read the following step-by-step guide on how to upgrade: http://wiki.cmsmadesimple.org/index.php ... /Upgrading

But, which version do I need?
CMSms comes in different packages: a complete pack, a English only pack and a latest upgrade files only pack. You'll need to select one to download from this page: http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/project/files/6#package-1

* Full = All files and languages for CMSms
* Base = All files but only English language for CMSms
* Diff = Only the latest changes (always specified from which version to which version this upgrade goes, ie. 1.9.4.1 -> 1.9.4.2) available in Full or Base, where respectively all language files or only the English language is included.

So, if you want your website to be in a different language then English, you can either download the full version or you'll will have to download a language file for the language of your choice. If you scroll down on the download page, you'll find the lang packs somewhere down the middle.

But why don't you just offer one pack?
Well, to keep the file size to a minimum, our devs decided it would be usefull to have a EN only pack, where you can choose which additional languages you install.

And what's this Diff pack?
A diff pack is the smallest pack available. It contains only the files which have been changed and it is English only. If you've upgraded before and are 'a semi-expirienced upgrader' you'll find that it's not scary or difficult. This is the easiest and fastest way to get your website up to date.

I still don't understand what to do
* Well, you've just downloaded your upgrade pack.
* Now, using winrar, 7z or something similiar, you should unpack this to your local pc.
* Fire up your favourite FTP program (Filezilla, WSFTP or similiar) and upload all the files to the root of your website. This usually a folder called 'public_html', 'htdocs' or something similiar. You'll know you're in the right directory if you see the following folders 'admin', 'docs', 'lib', 'modules', 'tmp', 'uploads' and the files '.htaccess' 'config.php' (there could be more folders and files, but should not be less)
* Before you close your FTP program, right mouse click the file called 'config.php' and make sure the permissions are correct. User, group and world should be set to read and write, or simply '666'.
* Now go to 'http://www.yourwebsite.com/install/upgrade.php' and click through the 7 steps.

How do I know the upgrade worked out well?
First of all, if you've not seen errors during the upgrade script you're probably good. Go to your website and check if it works like it should.
You can also use a checksum file, this will check if all the files transferred properly during ftp upload (you can download the checksum from the Forge , then go to your admin panel -after upgrade- and go to 'Site Admin' -> 'System verification' and upload the checksum)

Am I done now?
Yes and no, CMSms is now up the date, but your modules are not.
Go to your website admin panel. Click 'Extentions' -> 'Module Manager' and see if there are upgrades for your modules.
If it says 'Cannot Download' there are permission errors on the module's folder. Your alternative is to go to the Forge and download either the .xml file or the .tar.gz file.
Then go back to 'Extensions' in your admin panel -> 'Modules', where you'll find a 'upgrade using xml' option. Upload the .xml file and presto!
If that doesn't work, same link, download the .tar.gz. Unzip it, upload it to your ftp, go back to module manager and click on the Update button behind the module's name. Rule of thumb is to do the CGExtentions module first, since a lot of other modules depend on that one.

So is it over now?
Yes, I think you're done!

If, for some reason, this step-by-step procedure did not work out you'll get a error message. Copy this exact message and put it through google search and the search function on this forum.
Only if no results show up, open a new topic on this forum, where you explain every step you took, where it went wrong and don't forget to include the error message!

Happy CMS'ing! ;D

Thank you for your helpful and comprehensive instructions...Do you think they could made a prominent part of your user manual so that they could be more easily found?

This is very helpful to my understanding. Since I'm starting at 1.6.6 it seems better to just download the full 1.9.4.2 rather than doing a diff from 1.6.6. Is that reasonable? If so then is there a way to just update the database?
Thanks!
