At the end of the installation/upgrade process you will find two boxes that are checked by default.  You should uncheck these in order to preserve your data.

Install sample content and templates

Sorry but NO, those only appear during an install so you obviously didn't use the upgrade path...

yoursite.com/install/upgrade.php

Hello Dr.Css,

When I navigate directly to site/install/upgrade.php, I get an error:  Database connection failed... fatal error... \lib\adodb.functions.php on line 85

When I navigate to site/install/, I reach an interface which says:  Install/Upgrade System... Thanks for choosing CMS Made Simple

After entering required info and unchecking the boxes mentioned above, I get to the site/install/upgrade.php that you speak of, and I can finish the upgrade process.

Respectfully....

That's very strange, maybe something didn't make it up to the server...

BUT: The way you describe it may get someone else in trouble if they don't uncheck those 2 check boxes as it will wipe what they had and boy will they be mad...
