deactivating the news module

Eventually I want to figure out how to have news instead of showing up on the home page can be moved to another page which will be protected content thus the intent is that the news will also be protected. But for now I'm just trying to turn off news all together. If I uncheck the news active in the modules admin then the whole site crashes with a:
Oops!

I haven't tried uninstalling News as that is not what I really want do to. Is there someway to temporarily turn off News?

Make sure there aren't any {news} tags in page content or templates...

OK. I guess that is also a hint of how I could make News only accessible to certain groups. Just look for the {news} stuff in the template and then make it conditional on the user being logged in and a member of a group or some such. Thanks.
