Search module index table too big

Hi, I run CMSMS 1.9.4.3 for a newspaper website. The site now hosts some 22 thousand articles using the news module.
I have found that the admin is slowing down.
According to my DB guy its because the cms_module_search_index table has close to 7 million rows and 224 Mb.
Can I trim down this table? What implications might this have? What alternatives do I have?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
