Do you know of any good web hosting companies?
I'm looking for a web hosting company to host my business website. I'd like to conduct some e-commerce and also to be able to set up a content management system on my site. Do you know of any good web hosting companies that could accomodate someone with needing these features?

I'm happy with Arvixe. CMSMS recommends them.

I'd go with a local company. You're more likely to get good customer service, deals on traffic, stuff like that. Use the white/yellow pages or their web equivalent.

I like IX for webhosting. For their hosting plans are just perfect. It's always good to have 3 domains because it makes you much more flexible.. And the support is really the best I ever saw..

This is always a touchy topic and everyone has a reason to like one hosting company and dislike another.

My personal choice is 1&1 (1and1.com). I've had good luck with them on multiple client assignments. They have a decent number of options, support for (at least) PHP5, SSH and php.ini and I've never had an issue with setting up and running CMSMS.

IX was the worst ever for me.. The price was right, but they kept on getting hacked (server side) and my .htaccess kept changing. They told me it was because my FTP password was probably insecure, but when I asked them to show me the FTP logs, there was no login at the time of the file change. After getting the runaround at the slow rate of one response every 2 days, I moved away.

I've used 1 and 1 since 2003. As well as shared space, I've had dedicated servers.

I've never had any issues of downtime. CMSMS works excellent with them.

IMO - I would recommend them all day long.

Shared/Reseller Hosting: Cartika.
VPS/Hybrid: Knownhost.

Search webhostingtalk and you'll have a hard time finding negative comments about their service/support/uptime. KH has shared as well but I've never tried it to comment about it though.

Before deciding on a web hosting company you should first determine which is the target audience you are trying to reach. Therefore if you want to have visitors from America then you should choose an American company. I would also suggest that you go for a cloud hosting company. That way if you need more resources you will have easy access to them.

I have used midPhase for about 10 years now... great 24/7 Tech support (in the USA) who know what they are doing. Relatively inexpensive, depending on your requirements.

It's always a good idea to look for hosting in your own country or state. That way the speed will be best for local visitors.

Things to look for are a recent PHP version (at least 5.2.4, preferably 5.3+) and a recent MySQL version (at least 4.1, preferably 5.5+).

Any host with these requirements will do. The other requirements like bandwith, storage etc. are dependent of the size and popularity of your website.

Arvixe is terrible. I have had email issues due to their poor MTA reputation for over 6 months. I am looking for a better provider.

I have tried several over the years and here's my experiences (I live in England and thus I prefer UK based servers as its a a bit beter for seo:

Webfusion: bad uptime, unhelpful support, over clogged servers

HeartInternet: Not bad, customer service is average to good, server speed is average, databases are over subscribed. Appears to be one of the better budget providers.

1&1: I would not touch them with a very long smelly stick. poor performance, terrible customer service.

UKFast: supposed to be one of the top performers, but I found them to be inflexible and poor value for money. Sales people that over promise.

TSO Host: A small company thats growing nicely. Fast servers, excellent up time, amazing customer service.

Go Daddy: US company: average speeds, good customer service, well featured hosting. Very cheap.

Hostgator: US company: good speeds, average customer service, well featured hosting. Very cheap.

This is just my own opinion, and with many things you get what you pay for. I would suggest the money you pay for hosting needs to reflect the value you put on your web site.
