thanks for all the help, made some progress, no issues observed going through 1.6.7 > 1.7 > 1.8.2 > cmsmadesimple-1.9.4.3-full.tar.gz just now upgraded to 1.10.3 it seems OK, though, get this in the log admin ERROR ERROR DETECTED: Call to a member function GetDb() on a non-object at .../public_html/...

You may also need to switch PHP versions a couple of times during the upgrade, it can be a challenge depending on how many outdated modules, extensions, etc there are. Check the release date of the version you're currently on (e.g. 1.6.6 is from 2009, so you may need to be on PHP 5.x for that to wo...

I've managed to set up a new install as a test, and, I've also managed to move the old site to new server (after fiddling with some vhost conf)
